Coast Whips Harvest by the Half

November 15, 1987

Top-seeded Coast Christian of Redondo Beach needed only one half to defeat Harvest Christian of Buena Park, 48-0, Saturday afternoon in the first round of the CIF Eight-Man Small Division football playoffs at Mira Costa High.

The game was called at half time because of the 45-point mercy rule used in eight-man football.

Running back-wide receiver Jerry Stephens scored four touchdowns, running back Earl Rhodes rushed for 165 yards and two TDs on eight carries, and quarterback Steve Luce passed for 90 yards and three scores as Coast Christian improved its record to 10-0.

The Saints, champions of the Heritage League, will play Cal Lutheran in the second round next week.

Harvest Christian, a first-year school, suffered its first loss and finished with a 7-1-1 mark.
