Orange Coast College's Bart Recktenwald set the national record for all-purpose yardage in a season Saturday night, but left the business of beating up Palomar to others.
Recktenwald gained 258 yards for a season total of 2,409, breaking the record of 2,321 set by Gavilan's Alonzo Washington.
However, it was the passing combination of Keith Jarrett to Faasamala Tagaloa that beat Palomar, 37-23, in front of 3,200 in LeBard Stadium.
The victory keeps the Pirates (8-1, 7-1) tied for first with Saddleback in the Mission Conference. Saddleback defeated Citrus, 55-9, Saturday night.
Jarrett and Tagaloa teamed up three times for touchdown passes, covering 34, 22 and 25 yards. It was the fourth time this season that Tagaloa has caught three touchdown passes in a game.
