****Excellent ***Good **Fair *Poor : COMPACT DISCS

November 17, 1987|RICHARD CROMELIN | Compiled by Terry Atkinson

"The Adventures of Schoolly-D." Ryko. Even when it's good, rap music tends to wear you down over a long haul, and this CD-only combo of the feisty Philadelphian's first two albums (plus one unreleased track) can be tough-going in one 68-minute sitting. Schoolly-D has ridden a reputation as a genuinely dangerous character, but he sounds more sullen than anything on these 13 songs, which cover the usual territory of sex and status in the urban cage. Some heavy rock criticism and "Gilligan's Island" erotica spice things up, and deejay Code Money concocts some powerful sonics that take advantage of the CD's dynamic range. But the absence of musicality makes this a better bet for people with multi-disc players. ** 1/2
