Bishops Rap School Sex Clinics

November 18, 1987|Associated Press

WASHINGTON — America's Roman Catholic bishops today called for laws to outlaw public school health clinics that dispense contraceptives and provide abortion counseling.

By a voice vote with no audible objection, the National Conference of Catholic Bishops approved a lengthy statement that called the clinics "morally objectionable" and of dubious value in discouraging teen-age pregnancies. The bishops rejected an amendment calling for Catholic schools to develop "positive programs on sex education," keeping less explicit language saying the church is committed to "revising and promoting our curriculum guidelines for sex education."
