Eighteen Indian soldiers held captive by Tamil guerrillas in northern Sri Lanka for more than a month were set free, Indian television said. The rebel separatist group, Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, captured the 18 soldiers last month in various areas when Indian troops launched a major offensive in the Jaffna Peninsula to enforce a July peace accord signed by Sri Lankan President Junius R. Jayewardene and Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. About 20,000 Indian soldiers have been sent to Sri Lanka.
