The last Air Force silo used for the now-retired Titan 2 missile will be destroyed Tuesday in Quitman, Ark., by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Pentagon announced. Fifty-four sites were constructed in the 1960s to accommodate the liquid-fueled Titan 2 missiles, spreading them among bases in Arizona, Kansas and Arkansas. However, President Reagan decided in 1981 to scrap the Titans as part of his strategic modernization program, which led to the introduction of the new MX missile. The deactivation began in 1982 and was completed May 5, when the last of the missiles was removed from alert in Arkansas.
