TOKYO — Iran is negotiating with the Soviet Union on a new defense treaty, the Speaker of Iran's Parliament, Hashemi Rafsanjani, said in an interview with a Japanese newspaper released Saturday.
The Asahi Shimbum said Rafsanjani, interviewed in Tehran last week, did not reveal details of the talks and had not decided when to visit Moscow although he had received an invitation from the Soviet government. He said negotiations on a new treaty had not developed very far.
In 1979, the Iranian revolutionary regime unilaterally scrapped the Soviet-Iran mutual defense pact of 1921.
Meanwhile, Japan's foreign ministry announced on Saturday that Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Velayati would arrive in Tokyo on Tuesday for three-days of negotiations on bilateral trade issues.
