"Rainbow Quest With Pete Seeger and Guests." Central Sun.$19.95. They wouldn't let him on "Hootenanny" or other network shows, so folk singer Pete Seeger ended up doing a series of one-hour programs on a New York City UHF station in 1965. In this episode (the first of three in Central Sun's initial release), Seeger conducts a tribute to Woody Guthrie, singing and reminiscing with his customary enthusiasm, earnestness and spontaneity. The master of audience interplay seems ill at ease performing in an empty studio--there are no guests to help out (contrary to the billing)--but he loosens up soon enough. Highlights include his impromptu setting to music of some Guthrie lyrics sent in a letter by a Merchant Marine shipmate, and a brief film clip of Woody himself singing with Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee. Information: (703) 444-2990. *** 1/2
