Protesters Beaten in Moscow

November 24, 1987|Associated Press

MOSCOW — Authorities beat Jewish demonstrators who protested near the Moscow visa office today and they harassed Western journalists and damaged their camera equipment, protesters and reporters said.

Eight protesters were arrested as they demanded that the Jewish family of Tatyana Kolchinsky, who has been seeking to emigrate for about nine years, be allowed to leave. Officials from NBC, ABC and Cable News Network said plainclothes officers cut their camera cables, and that an NBC crew was pushed to the ground. CBS News correspondent Wyatt Andrews said uniformed military officers stood by and did nothing.
