Local News in Brief : New Law on Swap Meets

November 26, 1987

By unanimous vote, the City Council approved an ordinance regulating swap meets in Gardena.

A moratorium on new swap meets, imposed in January, will continue until the new ordinance takes effect Dec. 24.

Residents' concerns over lack of zoning controls for swap-meet businesses prompted the moratorium. A subsequent city study concluded that without proper regulation, swap meets can "increase traffic, litter and possibly cause criminal activity."

Under the new ordinance, each new swap meet must apply for a conditional-use permit, which will require Planning Commission and City Council approval on a case-by-case basis.
