Blanca Fernandez-Ochoa of Spain opened the World Cup ski season by scoring an upset victory in the slalom race at Sestriere, Italy.

Blanca, a 24-year-old from Madrid known as a giant slalom specialist, edged Yugoslavia's Mateja Svet and Swiss star Vreni Schneider down the Kandahar course to score her first ever World Cup slalom victory.
