Jazz Album Briefs: Jobim, Manhattan Transfer

November 29, 1987|DON SNOWDEN

"IN ALL LANGUAGES." Ornette Coleman. Caravan of Dreams CDP 85008. Coleman throws down the harmolodic gauntlet of this double album. By featuring one record each from his '50s quartet and his current Prime Time band, with both units tackling seven of the same pieces, he emphasizes the common thread of his compositions. The 10 selections by the original quartet are simply glorious--bluesy, earthy, contemporary yet still of a piece with the group's first recordings. But the often reviled Prime Time has matured enormously--the futuristic slant it brings to "Peace Warriors" and "Space Church (Continuous Services)" shows how these different ensembles can shape markedly different performances of equal power from the same raw material. 5 stars.
