Camp Pendleton

December 01, 1987

Military investigators are still looking for two suspects in the stabbing death last week of a Marine at Camp Pendleton.

Lance Cpl. Christopher L. Gaines of the 1st Marine Division was assaulted Nov. 23 in a parking lot near an enlisted men's club. Gaines was stabbed in the chest about 11:30 p.m. as he was getting out of his car, according to a base statement.

Gaines was taken to the base hospital, where he died the next morning.

The motive of the attack remains unclear.

The Naval Investigative Service is seeking two suspects, both of whom were said to have short, Marine-style haircuts.

The assailant was described as a black man, 6 feet tall and 169 pounds. Authorities said he was wearing a gray jacket, light-colored trousers, and possibly a yellow sweater during the attack.

The second suspect was said to be a white man, 5-foot-8, with light blond hair and a blond mustache. He was wearing a blue shirt and dark pants.

Investigators ask that anyone with information call 725-5150.
