Congressmen Get Gorbachev Bid

December 02, 1987|Associated Press

WASHINGTON — Congressional leaders have been invited to meet with Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev at the Soviet Embassy during Gorbachev's Washington visit next week, House Republican leader Robert H. Michel of Illinois said today.

Michel said five members of the House and four from the Senate are expected to attend the meeting, planned for either Dec. 9 or 10. Gorbachev is meeting with President Reagan Dec. 8-10. An earlier plan called for Gorbachev to address a joint meeting of Congress, but that idea was dropped after vigorous objections by some conservative Republicans.
