Local News in Brief : LAPD Meets Hiring Plan

December 03, 1987

The Los Angeles Police Department, authorized to beef up its force by 250 officers this year, is meeting its recruitment projections, Deputy Chief Bill Rathburn reported Wednesday at a session of the City Council's Police, Fire and Public Safety Committee.

The department, which plans to hire more than 600 officers this year, including replacements for those who quit or retire, is 30 officers above its planned strength for December, Rathburn said.

Rathburn, who heads the LAPD's personnel and training bureau, said the department is also meeting the terms of a consent decree calling for the hiring of 22.5% blacks, 22.5% Latinos and 25% women candidates.
