San Diego Sports Et cetera : Houston Women Defeat Aztecs, 84-80

Barbara Anderson had 22 points and 6 rebounds to lead the University of Houston to an 84-80 victory over San Diego State Thursday in the first round of the Coors women's basketball tournament at Boulder, Colo.

SDSU's Jessica Haynes aggravated a hyperextended knee injury and is expected to be out until the Northridge game Tuesday.

Chana Perry scored 20 points and had 9 rebounds for the Aztecs (2-2). Perry scored six straight points during an 8-2 surge as the Aztecs closed to within four points (75-71) late in the fourth quarter.

The Aztecs will play Purdue today at 5:30 in the third-place game. Purdue lost to the University of Colorado, 79-54, Thursday.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

After slowing the pace in the second half, UC San Diego rallied to beat Colorado College, 91-82, in the first round of the Lee Fulmer Memorial tournament at the University of Redlands.

UCSD (2-3) trailed, 43-40, at halftime but controlled the second half, leading by as many as 20 points. Colorado College narrowed the deficit with four straight three-pointers in the final minute.

Kevin Stewart had 16 points and Andy Wagstaff added 15 points and 9 rebounds to lead UCSD. The Tritons meet Redlands tonight at 7 in the second round of the eight-team tournament.

Mark Kraatz scored 25 points and John Burkhardt added 17 to lead Christian Heritage College to a 121-79 victory over West Coast Christian in the first round of the Azusa Pacific tournament.

Christian Heritage (2-2) had a 54-32 lead at halftime. West Coast Christian is 3-4.

MEN'S TENNIS

Top-seed Scott Patridge of USD had to play three sets to defeat teammate Rick Matheson Thursday to move into the semifinals of the San Diego All College tennis tournament at USD.

Patridge won, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. He will play No. 5 Russell Meyers of San Diego State, who beat No. 4 Dan Matera of USD, 6-4, 7-6.

The other semifinal will be between two USD players, David Stewart and Mark Farren. Stewart beat Woody Yocom of SDSU, 7-5, 6-7, 6-4, and Farren defeated teammate J.R. Edwards, 2-6, 7-5, 7-5.

Semifinal matches begin today at 1 p.m. at USD.
