Police alerted by a tripped alarm caught a burglar inside the Hunter's Retreat gun shop in Cathedral City, but the suspect held them at bay for five hours before surrendering. Kenneth Ruell, 22, of Palm Springs, was booked on suspicion of burglary, police in the Riverside County desert city said. Officers had gone to the shop in the 67000 block of California 111 after a burglar alarm went off inside. They saw Ruell in the shop and ordered him to come out, but he armed himself with a shotgun, police said. No shots were fired.
