Prisoners in Michigan Win Ruling on Postage

December 10, 1987|Associated Press

LANSING, Mich. — Each prisoner in the Michigan corrections system is entitled to 10 first-class postage stamps a month, the state Court of Appeals ruled Wednesday.

The ruling by the three-judge appeals panel struck down a Corrections Department policy that free stamps be provided only to indigent inmates. It came in a lawsuit filed in 1981 by prisoner Ronald L. Jordan, who contended he was entitled to free stamps.
