First Off . . .

December 11, 1987|DEBORAH CAULFIELD | Arts and entertainment reports from The Times, national and international news services and the nation's press

Britain's attorney general has relaxed a ban on the British Broadcasting Corp. from reporting on espionage activities. The BBC announced that it had accepted an out-of-court offer by Atty. Gen. Patrick Mayhew to modify the prohibition. Under terms of the agreement, the BBC was released from the more severe effects of the injunction and now can report intelligence agency activities and names that have already been officially made public. A High Court injunction barring the BBC radio broadcast of "My Country Right or Wrong" remains in effect while the court considers the BBC's appeal. A decision is expected Wednesday.
