Local News in Brief : Irvine : UCI Psychobiology Professor Wins Award

December 14, 1987

Ricardo Miledi, professor of psychobiology at UC Irvine, has been awarded the Luigi Galvani Medal for excellence in neuroscience research, according to university officials.

Miledi was awarded the medal at the Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington after delivering the Luigi Galvani Award Lecture, entitled "Transplanting Receptors From Brains Into Oocytes," which are the egg cells of frogs.

The Galvani award is named after the 18th-Century Italian neuroscientist who first demonstrated that muscle activity is controlled by electricity.

Miledi, of Irvine, has spent more than 30 years investigating nerve processes and is recognized for his pioneering work on nerve activity in frogs.
