BRIEFLY

December 15, 1987

Arco Alaska Inc. has withdrawn from a proposed multibillion-dollar project to build a natural gas transportation system from the North Slope, through Canada to the West Coast and Midwest. Arco Alaska President William E. Wade Jr. said construction of the Alaska Natural Gas Transportation System would be uneconomical. The proposed 4,800-mile system to move North Slope natural gas to the rest of the nation won approval of the U.S. and Canadian governments in 1977.
