The World : Cocaine Ring Smashed

December 16, 1987

Six suspected leaders of a multimillion-dollar ring smuggling cocaine to the United States from Honduras have been arrested and will be brought to trial in about two weeks, Judge Miguel Angel Izaguirre said in the Honduran coastal resort of Tela. He said that the six--two Cuban-Americans, three Bolivians and one Honduran--were arrested last Thursday in Honduras and will be brought to trial before the end of the year. Izaguirre said those arrested included Rafael Arturo Gonzalez, a Cuban-American who has been dubbed the "King of the Atlantic Cartel" by the Honduran media. "We believe we've cut the head off the main drug-trafficking conspiracy in Honduras," the judge said.
