A pre-winter storm blamed for 58 deaths from Arizona to the Northeast blanketed northern New England with up to a foot of snow. Heavy snow warnings were posted for northern and eastern Maine, northeast Ohio and the southern mountains of Colorado. Snow spread from northern New England through New York state and much of Pennsylvania. Snow also fell in Ohio, Michigan and northern Indiana. Gale warnings were in effect for the northern half of the East Coast and strong northwest winds buffeted the Great Lakes region. Sub-zero readings were reported as far south as northwest Texas. Record low temperatures were reported at Wichita, Kan., as well as Lubbock, El Paso and Amarillo, Tex., where it was 5 degrees below zero.
