A federal bankruptcy judge in Greensboro, N.C., temporarily blocked the Internal Revenue Service from revoking PTL's tax-exempt status. Judge Rufus Reynolds granted a preliminary injunction requested by David Clark, a trustee overseeing the evangelical empire built by Jim and Tammy Bakker. PTL officials sought the restraining order after the IRS filed a $55.7-million claim against the television ministry in bankruptcy court. The ministry filed for Chapter 11 reorganization under federal bankruptcy laws in June. The IRS did not indicate if it would appeal the ruling.
