El Segundo and Torrance police, who ran surprise sobriety checkpoints Friday night, arrested 21 people on suspicion of drunk driving, authorities said Saturday.
El Segundo police picked up nine people over a two-hour period at Vista del Mar Boulevard and 45th Street, while Torrance police arrested 12 in four hours near Torrance Boulevard and Madrona Avenue.
"We felt successful," said El Segundo Lt. Ron Scheu, explaining that every fifth car was stopped for less than a minute. The department plans more holiday checks, he said. Torrance Lt. Tom Dempsey said his department is considering setting up additional checks.
