Brian Mitchell of South Africa retained his World Boxing Assn. junior-lightweight title by stopping Salvatore Curcetti of Italy in the eighth round at Capo D'Orlando, Sicily.

Mitchell (33-1-2) knocked down Curcetti (16-1-1) with a right hook in the seventh round and continued the attack in the eighth, bringing Curcetti to his knees before Venezuelan referee Enzo Motero stopped the bout.
