3 Killed, 11 Hurt in S. Africa Townships

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — Three black men have been stabbed to death and 11 people, including four policewomen, injured in a surge of violence in South Africa's townships, police said Monday.

The three mutilated bodies, found in black townships around the Natal provincial capital of Pietermaritzburg on Sunday, were apparently the latest victims of a bloody power struggle between black groups.

The feud between the Zulu-based Inkatha movement and the more radical United Democratic Front has claimed 220 lives this year in the previously tranquil region. Eight people have died in the past three days.
