SAN DIEGO — Kevin Charles Maultsby, a junior linebacker for San Diego State University, pleaded not guilty Monday to felony charges of kidnapping and robbing his roommate.
Maultsby, 20, entered the plea before San Diego Municipal Court Judge Joe O. Littlejohn. He is free on $10,000 bail. A preliminary hearing was set for Feb. 18.
The charges stem from an incident on Dec. 11 in which Maultsby's roommate, Marc Sievers, was forcibly escorted into a truck, driven to two different automated-teller machines and ordered to withdraw $400, said John Hewicker, deputy district attorney.
Prosecutors say the incident was an attempt to force payment for a stolen ring.
A friend of Maultsby's also faces charges in the incident.
Maultsby, a transfer from Diablo Valley College, started four games for the Aztecs this season, two at defensive end and two at outside linebacker. He had 33 tackles, two sacks and broke up two passes.
