Local News in Brief : Newport Beach : OCC Boating Project Meets Money Challenge

December 26, 1987

A deadline for obtaining matching funds as part of a challenge from a foundation has been met in a bid to pay for expansion of Orange Coast College's Rowing and Sailing Center on Newport Bay, the college announced.

In October, 1986, the Steele Foundation pledged $150,000 for the project, provided the Orange Coast College Foundation could match the amount by Dec. 1. College officials last week announced that more than $165,000 had been raised by the deadline.

Ground-breaking for the expansion project is scheduled for early spring, with completion anticipated by fall. The overall project is expected to cost about $350,000. A second story on the existing structure will be built, providing more space for classes and offices.

The Rowing and Sailing Center is on West Coast Highway, between the Sea Scout Base and Balboa Bay Yacht Club.
