December 29, 1987

In Guatemala, site of one of Central America's lesser-known guerrilla wars, at least 12 people were killed in fighting that continued without through the Christmas holiday. Government officials said eight leftist guerrillas, three civilians and an army soldier died while eight soldiers were wounded in clashes on Dec. 23, 25 and 26. A regional peace plan signed by Guatemala and four other Central American nations last August was designed to end the region's guerrilla warfare, which in Guatemala has been fought almost continuously for nearly 30 years.
