Nelson Bunker Hunt has been voted the Eclipse Award for outstanding breeder for the third time. Hunt, whose financial empire is crumbling, is leaving the racing business by selling all his interests this year. In 1987, he bred seven horses who won major races--Reloy, Swink, Rosedale, Rivlia, Talinum, Antiqua and Triptych. . . . Eleven horses are entered to run in Sunday's $100,000 San Gabriel Handicap. In post-position order, they are Bruiser, Conquering Hero, Truce Maker, Hot and Smoggy, Santella Mac, Vertige, Ifrad, Sabona, World Court, Samarid and Ten Keys. Bruiser and Ifrad are coupled in the betting and the weights are incredibly even--Truce Maker and Hot and Smoggy being at the top with 117 pounds and Samarid at the bottom with 113. . . . Angel Cordero, who suffered a shoulder injury in a spill Wednesday at Santa Anita, is out of the hospital and might be back riding Sunday, when he's scheduled to be aboard Vertige in the San Gabriel. . . . Jockey Chris McCarron's return has been moved up to next Saturday. . . . Bill Shoemaker exercised horses Friday morning, but took off his mounts with a cold, and Luis Ortega also didn't ride because of an ankle that he injured recently at Hollywood Park. . . . Eddie Delahoussaye rode three winners Friday, one a horse that was originally assigned to Cordero. . . . If the 10-year-old Truce Maker wins the San Gabriel, he'll be the oldest horse to ever take a stake at Santa Anita. . . . Apprentice Arturo Banderas has won six races in the first six days of the season. . . . Today at Hialeah, trainer Wayne Lukas will try to win the Flamingo Stakes for the third straight year. His Cougarized has drawn the outside post in a 14-horse field. Lukas won the Flamingo with Badger Land in 1986 and Talinum last year.
