January 05, 1988|JOHN VOLAND | Arts and entertainment reports from The Times, national and international news services and the nation's press

From our "The times, they are-a changin' " file, a University City, Mo., movie theater has closed after 11 consecutive years of weekend midnight showings of that quintessential cult movie, "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." The Varsity Theater's owner, Pete Piccione, said Monday he could not compete with multiscreen cinema complexes, so the Varsity is being turned into a drugstore. But the final curtain of Dr. Frank N. Furter et al did not pass unnoticed: Hundreds of patrons, many of them regulars, showed up for the final showings Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the movie that had kept the independent theater in operation.
