Pasadena : Setback for 'Y' Expansion

January 07, 1988

Plans by the YMCA and YWCA to build a new facility on Marengo Avenue were dealt a blow this week by the Cultural Heritage Commission, which refused to grant the groups permission to demolish part of the historic YWCA building.

The commission decided Tuesday that the north wing of the building, designed by architect Julia Morgan, was too valuable to destroy. The commission ordered a 180-day delay to negotiate a way to save the wing.

The YMCA and YWCA contend that the north wing is not worth preserving at the expense of endangering the $13.6-million project. The groups plan to save the Morgan-designed main structure, built in 1921.

The YMCA and YWCA intend to appeal the decision to the Board of Directors.
