Cambodian Regime Marks 9th Anniversary

January 08, 1988|United Press International

BANGKOK, Thailand — Cambodian President Heng Samrin paid homage to his fallen comrades Thursday as the government celebrated the ninth anniversary of its installation in power by an invading Vietnamese army.

State-run Cambodian radio, monitored in Bangkok, said the president and other leaders of the Communist Phnom Penh government laid wreaths to pay homage to Cambodian and Vietnamese soldiers.

The Phnom Penh regime was installed by Vietnamese troops that ousted the Khmer Rouge government. Nine years after the invasion, Vietnam has an estimated 120,000 to 140,000 troops in Cambodia.
