Dawn Charroin scored 17 points and had 8 rebounds Thursday night to lead Marina High School to a 61-32 Sunset League-opening girls' basketball victory over Edison at Marina.
Marina (14-2), ranked third in Orange County, took a 14-6 lead after the first quarter as Charroin scored eight of her points during that span. The Vikings were ahead at the half, 28-13, before expanding their margin to 32 points early in the fourth period.
Marina also was led by Dee Dee Stigar (12 points and 5 assists), Kathy Stuppy (11 points and 10 rebounds) and Liberty Brewster (8 points and 11 rebounds).
Edison (12-5), which lost to Marina, 60-50, in the Marina-Edison tournament's final eight days ago, made only 15 of 60 field goal attempts Thursday, 6 of 35 in the first half. Marina, which outrebounded Edison, 48-33, made 28 of 54 shot from the field.
"It was a case of us playing really hard and playing solid defense," Marina Coach Mike Thornton said. "We concentrated on taking their top three scorers (Wendy Sandstedt, Krisden Tanabe and Stephanie Moorman) out of the game, and we did a good job at that."
Tanabe led Edison, which was ranked fourth in Orange County, with 9 points and 11 rebounds, and sophomore guard Debbie Fischer had 8 points. Sandstedt was held to 6 points, and Moorman scored only 4.
