Tanzania Official Held on Stolen Tusks Charge

January 10, 1988|From Reuters

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania — A member of the Tanzanian Parliament has been arrested with three other people on charges of possessing 105 elephant tusks worth $23,500, the state-owned Daily News reported Saturday.

Police, acting on a tip, said they found Abdurabi Ali Yusuf, the member for the southern town of Songea, with the tusks loaded on his government Land-Rover near the Selous game reserve. Wildlife officials say the park is besieged by poachers who kill the elephants, then smuggle out the ivory.
