County Rejects Ban on Pit Bulls

January 12, 1988

Los Angeles County Supervisors today voted down, 3 to 1, a proposal to ban pit bull terriers from unincorporated areas of the county.

The plan, put forward by Supervisor Kenneth Hahn, was defeated after a number of defenders of the breed said the ban would have violated their constitutional rights and would have presented many enforcement difficulties. If passed, the ordinance would have given owners of pit bulls 60 days to remove the animals from areas of the county where the law applied.
