Local News in Brief : Mass Transit Proposal

January 14, 1988

The continuing effort among Los Angeles County political leaders to reorganize the county's major transportation agencies took yet another turn Wednesday.

Officials moved away from a proposal to create a third new agency to oversee all rail construction, which was tentatively approved late last year. Instead, members of the Southern California Rapid Transit District board and the Los Angeles County Transportation Commission voted to pursue maintaining the two existing agencies but rearrange duties for building the rail system.

Under this scheme, which is still subject to debate and joint approval, the commission would decide where all rail lines would go, as well as how they would be built and funded. The RTD would actually construct and operate the lines.
