Marymount Palos Verdes College Coach Jim Masterson said a prayer before Wednesday night's opening tip, but it didn't help. Harbor College dumped the Mariners, 89-70, at Harbor.
Masterson figured his club could upset Harbor with a trapping defense, and he was right, but only for the game's first 10 minutes. Harbor pulled ahead, 45-31, at intermission, hitting 17 of 31 from the field.
Marymount's defense did alter the flow of the Seahawk offense, but Harbor still hit 56% from the field. The Mariners shot 38% and never had enough opportunities to erase several 20-point deficits.
After Harbor went up by 21 at 64-43, the Mariners cut the deficit to 13 on Damon Bass' 10-foot jumper with 10 minutes left. But Harbor ran off 12 straight and Coach Ken Curry was ready to empty his bench.
