Move to Phoenix in the Cards

January 15, 1988|Associated Press

NEW YORK — St. Louis Cardinals owner William Bidwill told the NFL today he wants to move his team to Phoenix before the start of next season.

The league said the request will be acted upon by its Executive Committee at a meeting in Phoenix in March, or sooner. Three quarters of the 28 club owners, who make up the committee, must approve the request. Officials of Phoenix, Tempe and Arizona State have given Bidwill the option of moving from 70,491-seat Sun Devil Stadium to a planned domed stadium in downtown Phoenix in the future. Bidwill had said that the small size of Busch Stadium in St. Louis, the second-smallest playing site in the NFL with a capacity of 54,329, kept him from being competitive.
