There's No Reason for So-Called Sport

January 16, 1988

Carlisi should know that one person's jerk is another person's ideal.

Blowing holes in a contented, cud-chewing sheep with a telescopic-sighted shoulder cannon and then chopping off its head to mount on a wall is not sport. Nor is running a mountain lion to exhaustion with a pack of dogs and then shooting it out of a tree.

I quit hunting a long time ago, but I still like to shoot and still own rifles, shotguns and pistols. But, prompting the wrath of a host of "sportsmen" and the NRA (Nutty Rifleman's Assn.), I think trophy hunters and their proponents are--hmmm, what's the word? Oh, yes--jerks!
