Angelo De Mojana di Cologna; Knights of Malta Grand Master

Angelo De Mojana di Cologna, 83, grand master of the 900-year-old Order of the Knights of Malta who was appointed by Pope John in 1962 as the 77th grand master of the Roman Catholic order. The Knights of Malta, based in Rome, is the world's oldest order of chivalry and one of the most exclusive charitable organizations. It numbers about 10,000 members in 90 countries and is a sovereign order under international law. The title of grand master, head of state of the order that maintains diplomatic relations with 42 nations, ranks alongside that of cardinal in the Catholic Church and is held for life. The Sovereign Military Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta--the order's full title--was established in the 11th Century in Jerusalem and operated a hospital for pilgrims. De Mojana, an attorney, joined the order in 1940. In Rome on Sunday.
