Monrovia : 39 Arrested in Drug Sweep

January 21, 1988

In a crackdown aimed at cocaine buyers, Monrovia police last weekend arrested 39 people, including one dealer, on charges of cocaine possession.

About 40 undercover officers from the Sheriff's Department and the Monrovia, El Monte and Arcadia police departments posed as dealers on east Royal Oaks Drive, east Maple Avenue and east Walnut Street, which are known as areas where drugs can be purchased.

Monrovia police said those arrested included adults from as far away as Chino and Downey as well as residents of Monrovia, Duarte, El Monte, Arcadia, Bradbury, Covina, West Covina, Pasadena, San Gabriel, Glendora, Altadena and Azusa.

Similar operations were staged last year in Monrovia, Pomona and Inglewood. The operation in Monrovia last August resulted in 53 arrests.

Lt. Robert Page of the Monrovia Police Department said he did not know whether the operation would be repeated but added that police will do everything possible to stop narcotics trafficking on the streets.
