Leftist guerrillas in Colombia attacked an army base and shut down the nation's oil exports by blowing up a pipeline in their biggest offensive yet, the government said. The Defense Ministry said one soldier was killed in the attack on the army base, in the northeast state of Santander. Colombia had to suspend oil exports Sunday, costing it millions of dollars in export revenues, because of damage to its biggest oil pipeline, the state oil firm Ecopetrol said. In the last week, guerrillas also have attacked a town, ambushed three army patrols and killed a mayor and two mayoral candidates, the Defense Ministry said.
