SAN DIEGO HIGH SCHOOLS : Mission Bay Pulls Off Another Upset, 43-33

SAN DIEGO — The Mission Bay High School boys' basketball team is getting to be a bit upsetting to its City Western League rivals.

Mission Bay, using slowdown tactics on offense, knocked off visiting La Jolla, one of the league's preseason favorites, 43-33, Wednesday afternoon for its second straight upset. Mission Bay beat fifth-ranked Kearny, 59-54, in triple overtime Friday night.

Mission Bay took a 23-19 halftime lead and led, 33-23, after three quarters.

Mission Bay center Steve Grebing was the only player on either side to reach double figures, hitting 7 of 10 shots and finishing with 19 points. Grebing also had seven rebounds and seven blocks.

In other City Western League games:

Kearny 75, USDHS 66--Kearny, which didn't score a point in the first quarter in its last game against Mission Bay, broke loose with a 25-point first quarter against USDHS for the victory at home. Chris Ortiz scored 24 points for the Komets (14-3, 1-1) and Randy Robinson added 13. USDHS (4-9, 0-2), which trailed by 25-12 after one quarter and by 65-40 after three quarters, got 15 points from Anthony Massa.

University City 65, Clairemont 62--Murray Peller scored 26 points and host University City (8-5, 2-0) rallied in the fourth quarter. Lamont Jackson scored 23 points and Ray McDavid added 19 for Clairemont (4-11, 0-2), which led, 49-41, after three quarters. University City rallied, hitting 13 of 19 free throws in the final quarter.

CITY EASTERN LEAGUE

Madison 68, Patrick Henry 59--Jeff Harper scored 19 points, including five three-point shots, and had 11 steals to lead fourth-ranked Madison (14-2, 2-0) at home. Harper's 11 steals are a San Diego Section single-game record. Chris Maffucci of Army-Navy, Scott MacDonald of Lutheran and Mike Niggli of La Jolla Country Day had shared the record with 10. Terence Hamilton scored 19 points to lead Patrick Henry (9-6, 1-1).

Point Loma 66, Morse 60--Jeff Johnson scored 25 points and Beau Pack added 12 to lead host Point Loma (11-6, 2-0) over seventh-ranked Morse. Point Loma led, 46-34, at halftime and hung on through a slow-paced second half. Mark Lawrence and Marcus Combs scored 18 points apiece for Morse (8-7, 0-2).

Mira Mesa 65, Serra 59--David Lee scored 13 of his 21 points in the third quarter as Mira Mesa turned a 26-23 halftime deficit into a 48-38 advantage at home. Tal Miller led Mira Mesa (9-5, 1-1) with 23 points. Dexter Springall had 15 for Serra (0-2, 5-8) and Desi Dixon added 11.

CITY CENTRAL LEAGUE

Crawford 70, Christian 53--Lamont Grove, the county's leading scorer, had 28 points and Chris Johnson added 16 to lead host Crawford (7-7, 1-1). Tracy Halton had 15 points for Crawford, which led, 24-21, at halftime. David Jeremiah led Christian (7-5, 1-1) with 21 points.

Hoover 69, St. Augustine 53--Darryl McMillan scored 23 points and Stacey Domaille added 15 to help Hoover (2-12, 1-1) at home. Hoover outscored St. Augustine, 35-25, in the second half. Doug Carter scored 16 points to lead St. Augustine (5-10, 0-2).

Lincoln 58, San Diego 49--Joe Temple scored 18 points and Roger Johnson added 11 to pace No. 2 Lincoln (14-2, 2-0) at San Diego. The Cavers (7-6, 1-1) stayed close most of the game, but were outscored, 14-8, in the fourth period. Jimmy Kegler led San Diego with 17 points.

PALOMAR LEAGUE

Torrey Pines 45, Fallbrook 38--Top-ranked Torrey Pines (20-0, 5-0) thwarted visiting Fallbrook's slowdown attempt. Torrey Pines led, 22-14, at halftime. Courtie Miller scored 13 points and Kevin Flanagan added 12 for Torrey Pines. Mike West led Fallbrook (6-9, 2-2) with 17 points.

San Dieguito 59, Orange Glen 37--San Dieguito opened a 37-17 halftime lead at Orange Glen. Jack Minger led San Dieguito (7-9, 1-3) with 26 points. Shawn Macklin led Orange Glen (5-10, 0-4) with 14 points.

AVOCADO LEAGUE

Ramona 68, San Pasqual 67 (2 OT)--Tony Newman scored all four of his team's points in the second overtime to lead Ramona (8-11, 3-2) at San Pasqual. Nate Hollingsworth led Ramona with 17 points. San Pasqual is 1-9, 0-5.

El Camino 111, Carlsbad 69--Lee Cobb scored 24 points and Scott Oatsvall added 20 as host El Camino (11-4, 4-1) scored a school-record 111 points. James Noble and David Hill added 15 points apiece for El Camino. Paul Bassett led Carlsbad (5-6, 2-3) with 25 points.

METRO CONFERENCE

Chula Vista 43, Bonita Vista 34--Scott Matney scored 12 points to lead visiting Chula Vista (6-14, 2-4). Chula Vista led, 15-12, at halftime. Bonita Vista is 0-15, 0-7.
