Sewage Spill Befouls San Elijo Lagoon

January 24, 1988

About 20,000 gallons of sewage spilled into the San Elijo Lagoon near Solana Beach on Saturday, a county health department spokesman said.

Richard Porter of the San Diego County Environmental Health Services said the spill was reported at 11:30 a.m. after grease and debris blocked a sewer on the northern end of Rios Avenue.

He said the spill was stopped about 12:15 p.m. by the liquid-waste division of the county's Department of Public Works.

Porter said warning signs were posted around the lagoon, which is part of a county park and ecological reserve.
