Local News in Brief : Newport Beach : Man Shot by Police Is Still in Serious Condition

January 25, 1988

A 26-year-old Costa Mesa man remained in serious but stable condition Sunday after he was shot by a police officer following a foot chase through the streets of Newport Beach, authorities said.

Ricky Patrick Miller, who suffered a single gunshot wound in the shoulder area of his back, has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer. Newport Beach police identified Miller as a parolee from Texas but had no details on his criminal record.

A police spokesman said Texas authorities would be contacted today to determine Miller's status. The names of the officers involved were being withheld while an investigation by police and the county district attorney's office continues, police said.

The shooting took place early Saturday, after police investigating a reported burglary stopped a car in which Miller and an unidentified male companion were riding. Police said officers stopped the vehicle after noticing that its headlights were off.

When Miller got out of the car, he dashed down an alley and was chased by one of the officers, police have said. When the officer caught up to Miller, police officials said, he grabbed Miller from behind. Miller then spun around, his arm hitting the officer's drawn revolver, causing the weapon to fire, they said.

Miller remained under police guard Sunday at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital.
