January 28, 1988|ANN KILLION | Times Staff Writer

The Estancia High School boys' soccer team moved into sole possession of first place in the Sea View League with a 1-0 victory over Saddleback Wednesday at Saddleback.

Carlos Garcia, a senior center halfback for Estancia (12-4-3, 3-0-2), scored with 15 minutes to play in the first half. A Saddleback goal scored in the final minutes of the game was called back because of an offsides penalty.

"This was the best 2-A team we've seen this season," said Mark Payne, Estancia's first-year coach. "This is the first time Estancia has ever won at Saddleback."

Estancia is the top 2-A team in Orange County, ranked second behind Central of El Centro in the Southern California High School Soccer Coaches' Assn. poll.

Saddleback (11-5-2, 3-0-1) is ranked eighth.

"We played with a lack of concentration and motivation," Roadrunner Coach Mel Silva said.

The Roadrunners took 14 shots, five by Carlos Zavala. The match was only the second time this season that Zavala, who has scored 17 goals this season, did not score.

"He's an excellent player," Payne said. "None of my players are as strong as he is, but our team is balanced. That makes them tough to beat."
