Who Knew What When?

January 31, 1988

In the review of "The Holocaust in History" by Michael R. Marrus (The Book Review, Jan. 3), Daniel Polish states that "Marrus is especially fine in tempering criticism of Jewish leaders in Europe and the United States, reminding us that they did not know, while events were overwhelming them, what we now know in the light of a kindlier day."

I would like to recommend to Prof. Marrus, Rabbi Polish and others who share this view the book "Beyond Belief" by Deborah Lipstadt. Dr. Lipstadt documents the point that the information was available to all. The problem, therefore, was not lack of information, but rather disbelief of same.
