Valley trailed College of the Desert, 82-81, in a Southern California Conference game Saturday night with eight seconds left when the Monarchs' Bernadette Tillis tossed a 20-foot jumper that went in . . . and dropped out, taking Valley and its 13 game-winning streak down with it.
Valley, ranked No. 3 in the state, had possession of the ball twice in the last minute but could not score. "We had our opportunities and we didn't produce," Coach Doug Michelson said.
Serena Strange scored a game-high 37 points for Desert--the No. 2 team in the state--which outrebounded Valley, 47-35. "They really took away our transition game," Michelson said.
The Monarchs' Dametra Johnson scored a team-high 23 points and Ruth Aguilar added 15 points and 13 rebounds.
Valley dropped to 20-3, 6-1 in conference play.
Cal Lutheran 80, Christ College 69--Steve deLaveaga scored a game-high 34 points for host CLU to close within three points of the 1,500-point mark. DeLaveaga would become the first junior at CLU and only the fourth player in school history to score 1,500 points.
